Fixed Dentures

Losing teeth can be hard no matter what the circumstances are. Whether from a traumatic accident or removal due to decay, losing your teeth doesn't mean you have to live with missing teeth forever. At Columbine Dental, we offer many different options for people with missing teeth, one of them being dentures! There are multiple denture options to choose from, learn more about them below.

What are Implant-Supported Fixed Dentures?

When you think of dentures, you probably imagine a set of removable teeth soaking in a class of fizzy denture cleaner. While those types of removable denture still exist, today there is a far better alternative called an implant-supported fixed denture.

An implant-supported fixed denture is a lifelike set of replacement teeth, complete with prosthetic gum tissue that remains in your mouth at all times. It is securely and comfortably anchored by several dental implants that become an integral part of your jawbone once they’re put into place by your dentist. An implant-supported fixed denture has special attachments that fit over the dental implants that are designed to keep the denture securely in place while dramatically improving fit and chewing ability.

Advantages

Dentists and patients alike prefer fixed dentures over removable dentures because they:Implant supported fixed dentures vs removable dentures.

  • Look, feel, and function just like natural teeth
  • Don’t slip or click when you eat or talk
  • Help prevent bone loss in the jaw
  • Don’t require any messy dentures adhesives
  • Can last a lifetime

How It Works

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Because they’re made of titanium, the implants fuse to the bone, making them extremely stable and reliable. Once the set of fixed dentures is attached to the implants, the implants cannot be seen by you or anyone else. Depending on the volume and density of your jawbone, you will need as few as four implants or as many as six for your new set of teeth to function as well as the natural set of teeth you’ve lost.

What to Expect When Getting Implant-Supported Fixed Dentures

Replace all teeth. The surgery to place the dental implants that will support a fixed denture is a simple, routine procedure done in an office setting under local anesthesia in most cases. (If you need to have failing teeth removed, that will be done first, often on the same day your implants are placed).

Once the area is numb, the appropriate number of implants will be placed in your jaw at precisely planned angles and positions to maximize support and avoid anatomical structures like nerves and sinuses.

The dental implant procedure can take anywhere from one to three hours to complete, depending on how many implants are needed. Once the implants are in place, you can manage any post-operative discomfort you may feel using an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

What happens right after the dental implant surgery will depend on what’s best to promote healing in your situation. We may attach a set of temporary teeth right away, so you can leave our office with new teeth. A few months later, your fixed dentures will be put in. Otherwise, your implants will be left to heal for several months before your fixed dentures are attached to them. This is often the best option as it helps ensure that the implants remain undisturbed as they go through the process of fusing with your jawbone, which is known as osseointegration.

In either case, you will be told to eat a soft diet and avoid hard and chewy foods until the implants have completely fused with your jawbone, which usually takes about three months. If you think that’s a long time to follow a soft food diet remember that people wearing removable dentures have to eat like this all the time. Once your implants are fused to your jawbone and we attach your new set of permanent teeth, you’ll be able to eat anything you want including hard and chewy foods!
